For thousands of years, various indigenous peoples have inhabited what would become Indiana. Some of the U.S. government expelled whom between 1800 and 1836. Indiana got its name because, even after gaining state status, the state was still owned by Native tribes. Since then, settlement patterns in Indiana have reflected the regional cultural divisions that exist in the eastern United States. People from New England and New York settle in the northernmost part of the state. They settled central Indiana by immigrants from the mid-Atlantic states and neighboring Ohio. And southern Indiana settled by settlers from the southern Highlands, Kentucky and Tennessee.
